The Best Spring Cleaning Tips for 2020!

Seems like this year, spring has crept across the US much sooner than expected. And with this lovely season comes the desire to start packing away heavy blankets and coats, and getting your home ready for warmth and sunshine. With the newness of spring comes the desire for a clean, organized home, and we’ve gathered some of the smartest tips to pass along your way!

  • Empty those dresser drawers. Yes, every single one of them.

Sure, it’s no quick task. But we bet you’ll come across orphaned socks, tees with mysterious grease stains, or sweatpants with a hole in the seat. And yet there they stay, warm & cozy in your drawers, taking up valuable real estate. You might be surprised by what you have when you truly empty drawer…and what you find you can live without.

  • Roll up your sleeves and tackle those baseboards.

Here, we’ll make it easy: you just need to do this task bi-annually, at most. It’s a tedious chore, but we all know it’s one that needs tending. Over the course of 6 months or a year, baseboards (especially those around the kitchen area) seem to magically become sticky, and removing dust and grime isn’t as simple as whisking a feather duster over the surface. But oh, what a difference it’ll make once they’re thoroughly cleaned! (If your vacuum has a brush attachment, this can be a great tool to use on baseboards that grabs the grime but won’t damage the wood.)

  • Go where no one has dared go before: under your appliances!

If thinking about what’s under your fridge or stove makes you shudder, that’s probably a good indication that you need to bite the bullet and just clean it already. Other places that rarely see the light of day? The areas under your sofa, bed and dresser. Oftentimes you can get away without having to move the big lunking piece in question totally out of the way: a long handled broom or vacuum attachment can do wonders.

  • Wash the unusual suspects.

No one does it every month, but laundering items like curtains, duvet covers, shower curtains, pillow covers and shower liners is necessary as well. Each item should have a care tag that will tell you specifically how it should laundered. If you have ultra-fancy curtains or linens that can’t be tossed in a machine, consider taking them in to a professional. Removing a year’s worth of dust and who-knows-what-else will be worth it.

  • The spice of life isn’t made to last a lifetime.

If you’ve got a jar of cardamom with a “best if used by September 1997” on it, you seriously need to think about chucking it. Sure, spices and other cooking materials can be pricy, but if you’re trying to make a dish for the ages, and your ingredients are out of date, the taste and/or success can be seriously compromised. If there’s a “use by” date and you’ve blown past it, consider restocking. Your next batch of cookies will thank you.

  • Tackle your dishwasher’s hidden spots.

Oh dishwasher…we love you, but you’re so sneaky. So many hidden places for gunk and grime to accumulate. In particular, clean out two places: the filter in the bottom of the dishwasher, and the steam vent on the inside of the door. Depending on the make and model of your machine, it should be relatively easy to pop off the covers of both and clean out what’s inside. And you might want to use gloves, because sometimes this is a grosser task than you’d expect. For an added clean, run an empty dishwasher with a cup of vinegar in the bottom of your machine.

  • Don’t forget about your air!

Allergens and pollen floating around outside can find their way inside your home, by way of shoes, pets or cracks in your doors or windows. A clean home means every part is clean — and that means your indoor air as well. We think a high-quality air purifier like our Lux Guardian Air Platinum can be a great investment for a household with occupants who have allergy sensitivities or asthma because it can remove harmful contaminants and pollutants from the air circulating through your home.  Your home will smell fresher and cleaner, and you’ll likely notice a difference in how you feel, too!
